BIO

Anni Porrasmäki

b. 1992

Lives and works in Helsinki and Berlin.

I’m a visual artist working with photographs, video, and text, combining documentary, photographic, and cinematic methods. I primarily focus on long-term projects that examine chosen themes while simultaneously documenting and collecting visual material.

My works' recurring themes are the aesthetics of illness, thematics of memory, alienation, the politics of pain, the relationship between empathy and technology, the grief of time, and the absurdity of life itself. There are no longer clear boundaries between the personal and the fictional, the cinematic and the dreamed, the feared and the lived.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Culture and Arts from the Fine Art Photography department in the Arts Academy at Turku University of Applied Sciences. My previous studies include a degree in contemporary/jazz dance and journalism.

Besides artistic work, I’m working as a freelance photographer, being into contemporary dance, DJing obscure post-punk and wave music, being a resident DJ of gothic Club Anvil based in Helsinki and 1/2 of a disco déplorable collective organising underground events in various locations in Helsinki and Berlin.
