HOW TO START A FIRE

15.12.2023 - 6.1.2024

Galerie Pleiku, Berlin

A group exhibition, curated by Anni Porrasmäki

The exhibition features the works of eleven artists who work across photography, printmaking, painting, installation, film, drawing, and sculpture.

Works by Inari Raaterova, Jussi Lipasti, Santeri Lehto, Anna Mäki-Jyllilä, Anni Porrasmäki, Arina Baranova, T.K. Jestoi, formless/Maikki Siuko, SUOMINEN/TOIVANEN and Katrine Larsen Mosbæk.

The name of the exhibition, born from a recurring thought during the curator’s darkest times after falling seriously ill, signifies a quest for a spark and purpose amidst growing uncertainty.

Like fire, a person lives, pulsates with the beat of existence, and eventually extinguishes. How to create an unbreakable bond in a destructive world?

The artists delve into the interplay between creation and destruction, serving as reflections on processes of grief, loss, alienation, resilience, and nostalgia.

HOW TO START A FIRE extends beyond its literal meaning; it becomes a metaphor for light-making and rebellion against the backdrop of both personal and global catastrophes. The focus shifts to reflecting on hopelessness and its possibilities, embracing radical acceptance.

And how to start a fire without causing destruction?
